| Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage
by Elizabeth Gilbert
Amazon Price: $17.79 Used Price: $13.55 Average Customer Rating: 3.5 Review (rating: 1): Ugh. I was so disappointed with this book, having high expectations after "Eat Pray Love". I never skip pages, but I started skipping here. I felt like I was in a bar where the person next to you has one drink too many and won't stop talking about the same topic over and over... in this case, marriage.
I'm divorced and (happily) remarried so you'd think I could relate... I'm glad to see Gilbert taking her vows *very* seriously but God Bless, that was a long-winded "I Do".
Save yourself the trouble and just buy a textbook on relationships over this. There's no story, this is more of a rant than a book.

| Second Sight: An Intuitive Psychiatrist Tells Her Extraordinary Story and Sho...
by Judith Orloff
Amazon Price: $10.20 Used Price: $51.13 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 Review (rating: 5): I have rarely read a book that has touched me so deeply. This is a story of the journey of one woman who has a gift. She develops this gift slowly, but surely throughout her life. It is the gift of healing, among other things. Judith Orloff takes the reader through her rough teenage years, when she felt like an outcast amongst her peers. She felt her gift made her damaged in some way. Yet she goes through this time with courage and grace.
We already know Judith is a prominent psychiatrist, so I'm giving nothing away by saying that she decided to become one so she could integrate her medical practice with her healing gift. Unfortunately things didn't go exactly as she planned, which she discusses quite aptly in this book.
Her story is unique and her writing is flawless. She teaches us even as she dis...

| Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and In...
by Elizabeth Gilbert
Amazon Price: $10.20 Used Price: $0.01 Average Customer Rating: 3.5 Review (rating: 4): I read a bunch of reviews before purchasing the book. A friend highly recommended the book as well. I had read one review that mentioned Elizabeth being selfish and complaining a lot. My response to that review is that Elizabeth is supposed to be selfish! She is on a journey of self-discovery! She isn't traveling to save the poor in 3rd world countries. She specifically traveled to write the book about her own personal experience on how she wanted to figure out her place in life and how to heal a broken heart. This book wasn't meant to be a self-help book for others necessarily. She wanted to figure out her own problems and the reader could probably relate in one way or another. I also considered how she did some complaining, but who cares?? Again, that's part of the process towards how someone learns ...

| Master Your Metabolism: The 3 Diet Secrets to Naturally Balancing Your Hormon...
by Jillian Michaels
Amazon Price: $16.97 Used Price: $12.99 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 Review (rating: 5): I have so many earmarks in this book it's crazy. So much information that it takes a few times to read. Very impressed on her knowledge - and is responsible in making it clear we need to see our Dr. to get our hormones and cortisol levels checked out. It's scary what is going on with our food. The government isn't going to fix our problems, we are. They are going to make themselves and the medical industry richer by making us sicker - Getting healthy costs less then going on medication. This book has enlightened me and changed my life.

| Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences
by Jeffrey Long
Amazon Price: $17.15 Used Price: $14.00 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 Review (rating: 5): Dr. Long makes use of a fairly large series of stories of near death experiences which he obtained by opening a web site. The data suffer from the lack of a control group and no prospective studies. His argument for the authenticity of the data is its reproducibility from one indivdual to another in 70-85% of some of the case details and the cross cultural similarities (he has data received frominput from around the world). His arguments are semipersuasive and worth your time if your are inclinded toward a belief in an afterlife.

| Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Your...
by Melody Beattie
Amazon Price: $10.85 Used Price: $4.15 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 Review (rating: 5): I liked this book that I purchased one for myself after reading the copy loaned by my therapist. Goes to show how much I'm moved by it and wanted to keep one for repeated reading.
The author presents the topic from her own point-of-view and personal experience from the side of addiction moving to the other side, which is codependency. Little did I know that my behaviors and feelings were falling into the category of codependency. The book has a way of opening your eyes onto yourself, without sounding judgmental or persecutory. In a compassionate way, it made me understand that given any type of addiction-related situation (mine isn't alcohol or drug related yet the book still applied), the end-results are somewhat the same and related for individuals affected by another person's addiction and has a cl...
