Food Rules: An Eater's Manual
Food Rules: An Eater's Manual
by Michael Pollan
Amazon Price: $5.00
Used Price: $5.56
Average Customer Rating: 4.0
Review (rating: 5):
Maybe repetitive with respect to his other books, but this book is a nice quick, and well structured read. It provides some great simple rules that really make sense, and help bring us back in touch to what we are eating. Just having some of these rules in mind while shopping has made a big difference. Highly recommended!

Even the men in my life like these recipes. Anything that helps me help them eat healthier gets a thumbs up in my book. The recipes are not difficult (I am by no means a chef) and taste awesome! I can't wait to try some more.

Books, manuals, health guides, nutrition, DIET!!!!....what to eat!!!
Putting all of the above mentioned aside, this is a timely, essential guide to electing proper choices in our health and well being, not to mention our planet.
There is so much misinformation, trend diognostics, nutritional mumbo jumbo, warnings, supplementation, additives, chemicals etc.
It can really be so much more simple...
EAT FOOD, NOT TOO MUCH, MOSTLY PLANTS!
Value your eating time and selections, search it out, prepare and savor, appreciate and you will be healthier, happier and wizer.
This book will spur you on!

For me, there is no greater praise for a book. I'm 3/4 through the book now, and already, it has challenged my views on food, farming, markets, and the US. And I kinda want to be a "grass farmer."

Once you buy one of these books....you keep buying more. The info of what we are eating from restaurants and convenience foods is just shocking. Makes you never want to eat out or buy from a box again. David's books certainly makes me read every label before I buy them now!

The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Recipes from an Accidental Country Girl
by Ree Drummond
Amazon Price: $17.97
Used Price: $14.90
Average Customer Rating: 4.5
Review (rating: 5):
Ree Drummond captured thousands of hearts with her blog. Now she gives us this fantastic book full of her ranch-wife recipes. They are hearty enough to satisfy any hard working guy, and yummy enough for the kids too. This book is a treasure. The photography is wonderful (Ree is a photographer herself) showing just how to do the steps in recipes and the end product. Her humor and the beautiful photos of her ranch life make this book a keeper! It is the only cookbook I have bought this year.

Review (rating: 1):
I borrowed this book from a friend and tried the Master Recipe three times. Each time, I carefully measured the ingredients to ensure the precise amounts were used. Each time, I ended up with dough that was so wet and sticky that it was (1) impossible to work with, and (2) incapable of holding any kind of form.

Based on the other reviews, the recipe must work sometimes, but after three times, I give up, and will not be purchasing this book (or the authors' other bread book).

The NYT/Jim Fahey no-knead bread recipe is easier and more fool-proof than this one.

I really liked this book, it does not disappoint. Numerous photos through give ample visual appeal and insperation for such lovely dishes as Peach Buckled layered with almonds, thyme-roasted chickens with potatoes, and spicy black beab soup. Content is covered in 9 chapters ranging from Breakfast moving into samdwiches, soups, appitizers, salads, pasta, main courses, side dishes, and of course dessert. The book is great, easy to use, and uses ingredients that I can actually by at my local grocery. Overall I am impressed as will give to book much use.

Review (rating: 2):
i picked this book up at the library (thank heavens), as i'm looking for lower calorie alternatives for lunches and dinners. As i perused the book, i found the following flaws:

1) The recipes in this book are great if you're a stay-at-home blogger with no kids who doesn't have to go anywhere. If you actually have to leave the house to work, or if you have kids around, the recipes can be difficult to deal with. i take my lunch to work every day, and i don't always have access to a full kitchen to whip up one of the recipes in here, and i haven't a lot of them that would would work well as a take-and-go (i found mostly sandwich fillings and one type of salad, but i'm trying to find more interesting things than that!). i got this mostly for the mini-meal ideas, but hardly any of them can be easily ma...
